I thought to myself, this is going to be a lazy day so, television on, feet up and there it was on Sky Sports, highlights of the 1979 European Cup final between Nottingham Forest and Malmo played at The Olympic Stadium in Munich. (Yes I am a bit old)
Nostalgia kicked in and the memories came flooding back to that time when, myself and four friends piled in to a Datsun 180 and set out from England on the long journey to Bavaria.
It was an eventful and memorable journey but the highlight for me was sampling traditional German food for the first time. This much maligned cuisine offers so much, with its simplistic combinations of flavours and textures that even the most discerning palate would be tantalised.
Anyway, that is another story, so on to my review. As lunchtime approached I felt energised , and hoping to fullfill some of that nostalgia, I decided to pay a visit to The Blue Note, formally The Coffee Connection which is a German style café come bar owned and run by Holgar and his girlfriend Pa.
Situated at 332/6 Jira Rd, Buriram, close to the Rajabhat University, the café is easily accessible and possesses ample parking on the road.

Named after the famous New York jazz bar, the cafe’s décor reflects Holgar’s, who is an accomplished musician, love of music.
I received a warm welcome from Holgar and I was seated in the open plan area at the front of the premises. The menu was uncomplicated and offered many of the dishes I remembered from my travels.
A selection of German sausages (wursts), schnitzels (breaded fried meats), soups, meatloaf, sandwiches and much more presnted themselves to me in the menu. In addition there was a breakfast selection, and for the less adventuress a Thai range of dishes.
Currry Wurst and Chips – Plump Sausage with a Fruity Curry Sauce.

I opted for the Currywurst with French fries and his special for the day, a stuffed baked green pepper. The wurst was plump and full of flavour, the curry sauce that accompanied it was fruity with a subtle hint of chilli.
My pepper was delicious, it was stuffed with minced pork and flavoured with various herbs, it came with a rich, beautifully balanced tomato based sauce.

The bill came to 450 baht which, with a few beers, was excellent value. The Blue Note also provides live music when Holgar picks up his plectrum and strums out some of his favourite tunes on his guitar.
Holgar is An Accomplished Musician and Often Plays Music In The Cafe

This is one café that will definitely receive another visit, with its relaxed atmosphere, ice cold beers, big plump sausages and cordial hosts you get a real feeling that a little bit of Germany has landed in Buriram.
