A former limestone quarry that has transformed into a reservoir called the “Blue Lagoon” is now being promoted as a popular tourist destination in the northeastern region of Khon Kaen, Thailand. Local residents have witnessed the gradual seepage of water into the abandoned quarry, resulting in the creation of a stunning reservoir that attracts visitors eager to witness the sparkling emerald water reflecting the sunlight.
According to INN News, the Blue Lagoon is described as an unmissable tourist spot, characterized by its captivating emerald green water and surrounded by limestone cliffs across an expansive area of over 100 rai.
Situated in the Na Fai subdistrict of Phu Pha Man district, the Blue Lagoon is approximately a one-and-a-half-hour drive away from Khon Kaen City. With the increasing number of tourists visiting the site, vendors have set up stalls to offer refreshments and food.
One visitor, Phatpicha Thitanakphan, a 43-year-old tourist from Bangkok, came across pictures of the old quarry online and decided to make a detour to Phu Pha district to visit friends and explore the Blue Lagoon. She and her friends captured photographs at the quarry, which she claimed to be even more breathtaking in person. She enthusiastically encourages other tourists to visit the site.
Niang Daiphukhao, a 57-year-old local shop owner, mentioned that the number of tourists visiting the Blue Lagoon is steadily increasing. She urges the relevant authorities to provide proper signage to assist tourists in finding their way to the lagoon.
The Thai report did not mention any specific safety measures or whether swimming is permitted at the site. However, caution should be exercised, as a swim in the Blue Lagoon may seem like a refreshing activity, but it can be hazardous. A UK-based website warns against jumping into quarries due to the potential dangers of rocks, debris, toxic algae, strong currents, and deep, cold water lurking beneath the surface.
