A well-known coffee shop in Khon Kaen has appealed to the government to regulate the prices of sugar. With more than two decades of experience, the coffee shop is now grappling with the highest sugar prices it has ever encountered, causing serious concerns about the survival of the establishment.
Yesterday at 1 pm, a journalist visited several beverage vendors in the area, including tea, coffee, and sweet drink sellers, following a 4 baht per kilogram increase in sugar prices. This surge in sugar prices has affected many vendors, especially the renowned Gra Ta coffee shop located near the Government Savings Bank in the Salalang province of Khon Kaen.
Having managed the business for over 20 years, the owner of Gra Ta, 55-year-old Suneevorn Pojan, has never seen such a sharp rise in sugar prices. The 4 baht increase per kilogram has significantly impacted her business, as the prices of other essential ingredients like condensed milk, fresh milk, coffee, and even straws have also risen simultaneously. The continuous price hike is making it challenging for her to sustain her business.
Over the years, the cost of raw materials has only gone up without any reduction, leading to a steady increase in overall costs, explained Suneevorn. She mentioned, “The highest sugar price this year has been 25 baht, which has now reached 28 baht. This is the highest price I’ve seen since I started my business.”
Financial strain is a pressing issue. Her shop uses approximately 25 kilograms of sugar daily, as it’s a crucial ingredient that can’t be compromised, as reducing sugar would affect the aroma of the beverages, as reported by KhaoSod. She acknowledged that in the current economic situation, raising prices is not feasible, as people are already facing financial difficulties. “We have to absorb the higher costs and accept lower profits to keep our customers satisfied. Some of our customers who used to buy two cups a day have now cut down to one cup to save on expenses.”
Suneevorn further stated that both vendors and customers are burdened by the rising sugar prices, leading to diminishing profits. However, she is committed to continuing to provide delicious beverages to her customers. She urges the government to investigate the escalating sugar prices and take steps to prevent further increases. “Every day is already a struggle to make ends meet, and the rising prices make it even harder. I hope the government takes immediate action to support the livelihoods of people like us.”
