The second Buriram Golf Society Christmas Texas Scramble took place at Buriram Golf Course on Thursday December 19.

The competition was sponsored by the Grumpy Old Men Society, a group who meet once a month and look for ways to benefit the people of Buriram.

Eleven teams gathered at 7.15am to register , ready for an 8am shotgun start. Each team consisted of three players.

But unfortunately one team lost a player due to sudden illness. We wish our good friend Peter Hughes a speedy and full recovery.

It was rather chilly as the players went to their starting holes and many regretted not bringing something to keep out the cold wind. However, as the sun got higher it did warm up and the wind became very welcome, though it did make playing golf even more challenging.

Each team had their photographs taken by official photographer Neil Cameron. Neil is the current Captain of the Buriram Golf Society but was unfortunately unable to play due to injury. However, he took to his new role like a duck to water and we are grateful for the many photos he took during the round.

It was the usual format with each player driving off and the best ball is selected. All three players then play from that spot, this continues until the ball is holed. Four points are awarded for a birdie, three for a par, two for a bogey and one for a double bogey. Each player must have at least three drives selected. All teams started from the white tees but a birdie meant that they moved back to the blue tees and a bogey meant that they moved forward to the red tees. A par means they stay where they are. In a nutshell, a birdie means you move back, a bogey means you move forward where possible.

It is a very enjoyable format and all players always have a great time and look forward to these events. As mentioned earlier, the wind did make conditions more challenging but the greens were as good as they have been for some time. As ever, the caddies entered into the spirit of things, getting rather excited when their team played well. As well as the main competition, there were nearest-the pin prizes on the two par-threes.

Some excellent golf was played by all the teams but the winners Irish Bar proprietor Rod Young, Greg Miles and Peter Thripp came in with a superb score of 58 points, four under par. In second place were Lindsay Walden, Magnus Sundgren and Geoff Hull with 54 points, a highly creditable level par.

The nearest-the pin prizes went to Pedro Beat Riem who was inches away from a hole-in one on the first and newcomer Tommy Jackson on the sixth, the first thing Tommy has won at golf !!!
