The second Buriram Times Invitational Golf Tournament was played at Buriram Golf Club on Friday October 9th with a shotgun start at 8a.m. A record ten three-man teams entered the texas scramble and despite the weather, some quality golf was played.
It was the same format as the last scramble, with each team starting from the white tees. If a birdie was scored, the players move back to the blue tee for the next hole.
A par keeps them on the white, a bogey moves them forward to the red tee. This continues throughout the round. When on the red tee a birdie moves the team back to the white.
Ready To Go – David Sabino, Darrell Busser and John Newell
It was the same points system, 4 points for a birdie, 3 for a par, 2 for a bogey, 1 for a double-bogey. Following Thursday’s deluge the organizers were keeping a close eye on the weather.
Tony Murphy, Neil Cameron, and Keith Wood
Despite a heavy early-morning shower, conditions improved and the competition got under way on time.
As ever there was keen anticipation in the air and the caddies were also excited, taking their caddying duties seriously but with a smile. Although overcast, it was pleasant golfing conditions, albeit a tad damp underfoot.
Mike Pickard, Frank Barber and Roger Ribbins.

All was going well until around the half-way point when the skies darkened and the inevitable downpour sent the teams rushing for shelter. The lucky ones were near the club house or the shop on the fifth tee, the rest had to improvise!
Fortunately, it was only a short delay and play resumed about twenty-five minutes later. There were no more hold ups and play finished more or less on time which is a credit to the players.
Kosan, Larry Holland and Lynn Thompson

As well as the main competition there were nearest the pin prizes on the first/tenth and sixth/fifteenth holes. As the teams made their way back to clubhouse the tales of “what might have been,” could be heard. And there was plenty to talk about.
Before we get to the scores it needs to be mentioned that the players are all of mixed-ability. Some are seasoned golfers, some are beginners but the common denominator is the manner in which the game was played.
Peter Hughes, Andrew Moffitt, and Patrik Phukkelberg
To a man, everyone enjoyed themselves thoroughly and it is a testament to the organizers that this was the case. As always in golf, humour was never far away. We had our first DQ with the team of Alex, Tommy and Jim not quite understanding the rules.
This could be down to lack of communication in the team or perhaps under the circumstances we should have had a quiet word with them at the start as they had missed the previous scramble. The good news is they may have accidentally invented a new game.
Inventors of A New Game Tommy, Alex Lowe and Jim Dornan.
We’ll keep you posted. Shot of the day was from Pete Thripp who managed to sky a tee shot and then catch it when it came down ! Who said golf was dull ?
Roger Ribbins decided to hone his driving skills by ploughing through a puddle at speed in a buggy, before drenching a teammate. This was without a pit-stop to change to wet tyres!! Impressive stuff!
Steve McHonter, “Cosmo” and Bill Clarke.

Back to the golf. The scores ranged from 42 points to an excellent 55 points. Special mention must be made of Pete Hughes, Patrik Phukkelberg and Andrew Moffitt for attaining their highest position.
The team of Rod Young, Greg Miles and Peter Thripp scored a fantastic 54 points. Tee to green they were in a league of their own but to say their putting let them down would be being very kind indeed. Their words, not mine.

As previously mentioned the winning score was 55 points and our sincere congratulations go to Lindsay Walden, Magnus Sundgren and Geoff Hull. Well done fellas, great score.

Accepting Their First Prize
In third place came Peter Dempsey, David Griffin and Graham Dresser with 52 points. This was despite David “losing” his ham sandwich before the start. Peter Dempsey also made the valid observation that as both he and I are associated with the Buriram Times it would be improper to finish as winners!!

The nearest the pin on the first/tenth was won by Keith Wood and the prize on the sixth/fifteenth went to Steve McHonter. The teams then hit the showers before going to the Tulip Boutique Hotel in Buriram for the presentations.

Steve McHonter Accepting The Nearest the pin on the 6th/15th hole.
An excellent meal was provided by Sebo and his staff at the Tulip Boutique Hotel. As ever the quality of the food and service was superb and we are extremely grateful for their efforts.
After Golf Celebrations at The Tulip Boutique Hotel
A big thank you has to go to Hywel Wiliams, owner of the Buriram Times, for his generosity in sponsoring the event and he assures us he will continue to do so for the forseeable future.
Peter Dempsey once again was master of ceromonies for the prize-giving and he was assisted by two lovely ladies, Lucky and Da . After the presentaions the “merry” band made their way home or went to continue socializing elsewhere.
A great success and long may they continue. Thanks again to Peter Dempsey and his team of helpers for organizing the event. No easy task. Thanks also to Adam Illing who took time out from his birthday celebrations to be the event official photographer.
