Following on from a report that authorities had been tipped off that bomb attacks were being planned in the capital, a man has been arrested .

Police raided a rented room in Bang Sao Thong district on Monday and it is believed the unnamed suspect was  planning to detonate three car bombs in greater Bangkok later this month.

They were acting on information that car bomb attacks were being planned at a shopping centre, a parking area and a location frequented by tourists in greater Bangkok between Oct 25 and 30.

Phones, wires and four boxes of what were believed to be bomb components were seized from the suspect’s room.

Police have advised local shopkeepers to remove rubbish bins from the front of their premises and to remain vigilant regarding vehicles that were left unattended for a long time.

It is believed that two other men of Narathiwat province had rented the room but left it with rucksacks last Wednesday. A widespread manhunt for the two men is ongoing.

Another bombing suspect, arrested in Bangkok’s Ramkhamhaeng area last week, informed police that he and the two other men had hidden plastic pipes and detonation caps above ceiling tiles in the rented room in Bang Sao Thong.

However, nothing was found and police believe they were either removed or destroyed.
