Thailand on Friday (April 22) reported 21,808 new COVID-19 cases, 19,826 recoveries and 128 additional deaths over the past 24 hours.
Friday’s cases bring the total number of COVID-19 infections in Thailand to 4,128,038 with 27,520 deaths.
The news comes as Thailand’s Center for Medical Genomics (CMG) at Ramathibodi hospital has issued a warning about a new Omicron sub-variant, BA.2.12.1, which is becoming more prevalent in the US, accounting for roughly 20% of all new cases across America, and believed to be highly contagious.
Citing a report by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), issued on Tuesday, the CMG said that BA.2.12.1 is estimated to be 23% to 27% more transmissible than its predecessor BA.2 and is fuelling a resurgence in COVID cases in upstate New York.
