An elderly woman fatally crashed into a rice field yesterday afternoon in the Kum Pha Wa Pi district of Udon Thani province, leaving two seriously injured.

The 70 year old woman driving to a medical appointment yesterday, March 19, suddenly lost control of her vehicle, which veered off the road and overturned several times before coming to a stop in a rice field.

At the scene, emergency services discovered a Honda HR-V with Sakon Nakhon license plates, the front of which was severely damaged. Inside, the body of a 70 year old woman was found on the back seat. Another woman of similar age, who had been driving, as well as a front passenger, was already transported to Kum Pha Wa Pi Hospital with serious injuries.

Investigators found evidence suggesting the women were en route to a hospital appointment, including a medical appointment slip for Srinakharin Hospital in Khon Kaen among the personal items recovered from the vehicle.

An eyewitness, Sarayut, a 50 year old vendor selling boiled peanuts by the roadside, described the harrowing moment. He was flagging down passing motorists to sell his peanuts when he noticed the car driving along the Kum Pha Wa Pi-Huai Keng route.

The vehicle swerved off the road and into the rice field, flipping multiple times before crashing into an embankment. Good Samaritans rushed to the scene to assist, flipping the car back over and helping to transport the injured to the hospital. Unfortunately, they also discovered the deceased woman in the back seat.

Police officials, led by Lieutenant Colonel Nopadol Kantikul and his deputy Lieutenant Colonel Bamrung Naepchidchai, along with the Pha Pattana Tham rescue team, were quick to arrive at the scene to investigate the accident. The police are currently working to determine the cause of the crash.

It is suspected that the driver may have lost consciousness, leading to the tragic outcome. The body of the deceased was sent to the hospital for an autopsy, and authorities are conducting a full investigation in accordance with the law. The family of the victims will be making funeral arrangements following the release of the body.
