A brand-new electric vehicle, priced at over a million baht, unexpectedly ignited while being charged in front of a shopping mall in Udon Thani, northeast Thailand. The car’s owner, a 41-year-old man using the pseudonym Vin, was surprised when, at 50% battery charge, the vehicle started emitting smoke from beneath the front hood. Chinese engineers are presently examining the incident of the electric car catching fire, which took place at 2 pm yesterday.
The scene of the electric car fire was chaotic, with smoke billowing out from the gray BYD electric car, which had a red registration plate. Firefighters and rescue personnel from the Udon Thani Municipality and Udon Sawang Methatham Foundation quickly responded, successfully extinguishing the fire with foam and subsequently disconnecting the car’s battery and drenching it with water once more.
Vin described the electric car fire situation, recounting how he had driven the car to the mall for a family shopping trip. After arriving, he parked at the charging station because the car’s battery was only at 10%. While his family went shopping, Vin remained inside the car. When the battery reached 50% charge, he noticed smoke emanating from beneath the hood and promptly alerted mall security, who brought a fire extinguisher before he contacted the fire department.
Vin had purchased the electric car just one week prior for a price exceeding 1 million baht and had regularly charged it both at home and at various charging stations. He expressed his astonishment at the unexpected electric car fire, as he had never anticipated such a situation, as reported by KhaoSod.
The police suspect that the electric car fire might have been caused by an electrical short circuit, but they intend to interview Vin and conduct a more thorough investigation at the dealership to determine the exact cause of the fire.
Meanwhile, BYD has deployed Chinese engineers to examine the incident and will closely examine the vehicle’s charging history
