A video on social media is causing much comment after a Burmese food court worker inadvertently went over a customer’s toe with a plate collection trolley.
The old male customer launches into a withering tirade of abuse against the startled worker who repeatedly says sorry and wais several times in apology.
No one lifts a finger to defend her from the verbal assault that left her in floods of tears.
The customer uses very abusive Thai language – he calls her a water monitor several times and invites her to go and perform a sex act with her mother.
Thais online – and 138,000 had viewed the footage already – turned on the customer as a foul-mouthed slob.
The manager of the unnamed department store in Ratchada Phisek Road gave his employee little apparent support.
He said that he had seen the video and spoken to the staff member. “But as far as any other comments you will have to speak to head office. That is company policy,” he said.
The plate collector who is a Burmese lady, has been in Thailand for 3 years. She said she had said sorry repeatedly and wai-ed three or four times. It was a complete accident.
She then went to sob in a corner of the store, terrified that she might lose her job and be unable to support her family back home with her monthly pay check.
In one way it is sad that such a story has made national news. However, although the incident was trivial, the consequences could be dire for the poor lady concerned.
It is to be hoped that she gets the support she should have had from the start. The only job that should be on the line is that of the manager’s who took the coward’s way out.
As for the Thai man, in a country where respect is supposed to be everything, let’s hope the offending toe drops off !!
