Customs and livestock officials on Monday buried 4,004 kilograms of seized, smuggled buffalo meat as it was possibly contaminated.

The meat, believed to be from Brazil, was seized early Sunday morning after a white pickup with built up sides sped past a checkpoint at Ban Muang Ba in tambon Kham Ahuan of Muang district without slowing for a routine check.

The checkpoint was jointly manned by customs officers, immigration police and soldiers from the navy’s Mekong Riverine Unit.

The speeding vehicle was pursued and found abandoned on the side of the Mukdahan-Ubon Ratchathani highway. It was carrying cardboard boxes containing the smuggled buffalo meat.
