Free vehicle checks during manic Songkran.

The Department of Land Transport (DLT) has set up free vehicle examination centres across the country to try to improve road safety during Songkran.

DLT director-general Sanit Promwong said the vehicle checkup centres are now open in 2,000 locations nationwide to all cars and motorcycles. The service will remain until April 24.

Motorists can see a “free checkup” sign put at the centres.

The free examinations list contains 20 items, including the braking system, tire condition, windshields, oils and liquids, the battery and the lighting system.

For public transportation, Sanit said passenger vans operating on inter-provincial routes are required to have GPS and driver identification devices installed by the end of this month.

The measure is aimed at allowing for real-time monitoring of the vehicles during their operation so that authorities can identify their whereabouts, measure their speed and time spent on the road as well as observe the driver’s behaviour.
