A factory worker in Pak Thong Chai, Nakhon Ratchasima, faced an abrupt dismissal after he asked for time off to attend his grandmother’s funeral. This incident generated widespread social criticism and became known through a conversation on the Line app, where the worker requested a two-day leave from his supervisor.

Initially, the supervisor’s response of “feel free” was interpreted as permission to attend the funeral. However, the worker received a phone call from an official notifying him of his dismissal, despite labor rights. In response, the worker shared the conversation and his ordeal on social media, triggering a wave of condemnation.

On September 18, Nisai Sukra, an official from the Nakhon Ratchasima Labour Protection and Welfare Office, acknowledged the incident through various media reports. He instructed labor inspection officials to visit the Pak Thong Chai factory in Nakhon Ratchasima and meet with administrators and human resources personnel to clarify the details. It was noted that the worker was currently in monkhood and had not returned to work.

The individual responsible for approving the leave request and making the termination decision remained unclear. Regardless of whether it is a factory or a subcontracting company, they are obligated to adhere to the regulations set by the Labour Ministry. These regulations stipulate that employees have the right to take necessary personal leave, not exceeding three working days per year, and the employer must compensate the employee for these leave days.
