Relentless and continuous rainfall in Nakhon Ratchasima has led to a significant rise in water levels upstream of the Phimai Dam. In response to this situation, the authorities responsible for overseeing the Phimai Dam have taken proactive steps. They have opened two floodgates strategically to redirect the excess water into local irrigation canals.
This crucial action has brought much-needed relief to farmers in the Tha Luang, Chivan, Dong Yai, and Krachon regions. It ensures a continuous supply of water for their essential agricultural activities. The torrential rains had pushed the Phimai Dam dangerously close to its maximum capacity, prompting swift action by the Water Distribution Project Centre and dedicated officers from the Samrit Tung Field Maintenance team stationed at the Phimai Dam.
Their decision to open two floodgates at the primary canal’s entrance has effectively guided surplus water into the irrigation network, providing a timely lifeline to the agricultural heartlands of the region. Additionally, 1-meter-high floodgates at the rear of the Phimai Dam were raised to supply water for agricultural use to the farmers located behind the dam. However, these floodgates will be closed to store water if the heavy rainfall subsides.
Meanwhile, local residents have taken advantage of the situation to fish in the Mun River. As water levels rise, fish move downstream, and the community has capitalized on this opportunity to catch various species, including white fish, doctor fish, and tilapia. The catch is primarily used for meals, but if there is an abundance of fish, it is sold to generate income for families.
The current circumstances have effectively transformed a crisis into an opportunity, with locals making the most of the increased water flow. This has also provided essential water resources to farmers, ensuring their agricultural activities can continue despite the heavy rainfall. Nevertheless, as the weather conditions change, authorities remain vigilant and prepared to adjust their water management strategies accordingly.
