On Friday, the day that many Pattaya motorists had been waiting for, arrived. After months of speculation the Pattaya tunnel was finally opened and is now fully operational.

The opening ceremony was attended by several dignitaries including Akom Thermpittayapaisit from the Ministry of Transportation, the governor of Chonburi, Pakaratorn Tienchai, and the Mayor of Pattaya, Anan Charoenchasri.

The underpass had been marred with setbacks during its construction where it reportedly cost 837,441 million baht to complete but was deemed necessary to easy traffic flow in the area as the intersection between Pattaya Klang and Sukumvit Road had become a notorious spot for traffic problems.

The tunnel is 0.95 kilometres long with four 3.5 metre wide lanes to facilitate traffic flow and is equipped with a security system that controls the air vents and traffic cameras which monitor for any accidents.
