“Porky” Police Officers Sent To Boot Camp

Overweight officers sent to boot camp.

Police in Thailand have a busy time of it tackling criminals and traffic problems well now they’re also targeting another enemy in the form of obesity.

Though it is difficult for them to combat clogged roads they make an effort to combat clogged arteries via a 12-day boot camp aimed at the slightly larger members of the force.

Some 60 overweight officers from all over the country have been sporting t-shirts with the slogan “get rid of the belly” and will be attending the program that includes activities such as pre-dawn jogging, yoga; aerobics dance classes and seminars on healthy eating.

In the style of the popular TV show the biggest loser,ie the officer who sheds the most weight, will receive a 5,000 baht  bonus though the majority of the participants say their motivation is to improve their health.

Annual check-up’s found that the main health concerns for the nations officers to be obesity, high cholesterol, liver problems, high blood pressure and diabetes.

The head of the program Col Pornpen Bunnag said that officers are susceptible to the already mentioned health problems as a result of not eating and sleeping on a normal schedule for example eating at the end of a late-night shift.

He also remarked that apart from the obvious health risks, “Their potbellies make them look less sharp in their uniforms.”
