Keep safety in mind at Loy Krathong festival.

The Department of Disease Control (DDC) has warned the public of risks of drowning, road accidents, and being injured from igniting fireworks and firecrackers during the Loy Krathong festival, which is today (November 3rd) this year.

The DDC Director General, Suwannachai Watthanayingcharoenchai, said statistics revealed that the rate of child deaths by drowning was strikingly high from the past 10 years between 2007 and 2016. The rate was twice as high for children aged between five and nine years old.

During the Loy Krathong festival, parents and guardians are advised to keep children well away from waterways and ponds and in their sight at all times. They should not let their children collect coins in the decorated baskets (krathong).

The department has also warned motorists to drive safely. In addition, people should not ignite fireworks and firecrackers near inflammable objects or houses. They should be kept away from sunlight and should not be kept in pockets. Adults should not leave their children alone with these explosive materials.

All of this is sound advice and hopefully will be heeded. It only takes a second for an accident to occur , particularly when children are involved.

One thing that was not mentioned is the danger of “homemade” fireworks and it is extremely unwise to create your own or buy “bargain” fireworks from unlicensed dealers.

Stay safe and enjoy this beautiful festival.
