Wassana Tapaopong, wife of Puttipat Lertchaowasit, former permanent secretary for social development and human security, was declared out of danger after a drug overdose in an apparent suicide bid on Friday.

Puttipat, 59, was found dead in a bedroom on the second floor of their residence in Pathum Thani Friday morning. Ms Wassana was also found in the bedroom in serious condition.

Both were believed to have swallowed pills with alcohol. Two glasses of wine were found beside their bed.

Ms Wassana was rushed to Pathum Thani Hospital and was declared out of danger this morning but will still be treated in an intensive care unit. No visitors are allowed.

Funeral rites for Puttipat are scheduled to be held today until July 1 at Wat Phromwongsaram in Bangkok’s Din Daeng district.

Puttipat was facing a disciplinary investigation over the large-scale embezzlement of government funds for the destitute. He was earlier dismissed as permanent secretary for social development and human security, pending the investigation.
