Roi Et is a province located in northeastern Thailand, known as Isan or Isaan. It is one of the 76 provinces of Thailand and is situated approximately 500 kilometers (310 miles) northeast of Bangkok, the capital city. Roi Et is bordered by several other provinces, including Maha Sarakham, Surin, Yasothon, Kalasin, and Mukdahan.

The name “Roi Et” means “one hundred and one” in Thai, which is believed to refer to the province’s original 11 districts (amphoes) combined with the 101 sub-districts (tambons). The region is characterized by its rural landscape, rich agricultural land, and traditional way of life. Rice farming is the predominant occupation, and you can see vast rice fields and farms throughout the province.

Roi Et has a long history dating back to the Dvaravati period in the 6th to 11th centuries. The area has been influenced by various kingdoms and empires, including the Khmer Empire and the Lan Xang Kingdom. The province has several historical and cultural attractions that showcase its heritage, such as ancient temples, ruins, and traditional festivals.

One of the main attractions in Roi Et is the Roi Et City Pillar Shrine, a sacred site located in the heart of the provincial capital, also named Roi Et. The shrine is dedicated to the city’s guardian spirit and is an important place of worship for the locals. Roi Et is also famous for its tall standing Buddha image called Phra Maha Chedi Chai Mongkol, which stands at 67 meters (220 feet) high and is one of the tallest of its kind in Thailand.

For nature lovers, Roi Et offers a couple of national parks worth exploring. Pha Nam Yoi National Park is known for its rugged limestone mountains, caves, and scenic viewpoints. Pa Hin Ngam National Park is another beautiful park with unique rock formations, lush forests, and picturesque landscapes.

The people of Roi Et are primarily of Lao and Khmer descent, contributing to a diverse cultural heritage. The local dialect is distinct from standard Thai and reflects the province’s geographical and historical ties to neighboring countries. Traditional folk music and dance are an integral part of the local culture, and visitors can witness performances during festivals and special occasions.

In terms of cuisine, Roi Et offers a variety of Isan dishes known for their spicy and flavorful nature. Som tam (green papaya salad), larb (minced meat salad), and gai yang (grilled chicken) are some popular local delicacies.

Roi Et might not be as well-known as other tourist destinations in Thailand, but it offers a glimpse into the authentic rural life of the country, rich cultural heritage, and warm hospitality of its people. It’s a place where you can experience a slower pace of life and immerse yourself in the local traditions.
