Sarawat’s goal sees off Philippines.

Thailand maintained their 100% record in Group A of the Suzuki Cup with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over hosts Philippines. Once again Sarawat popped up with the decisive goal nine minues from time.

Thailand rested Kawin, Chanathip and Teerasil, with Sinthaweechai, Chapuis and Mongkol coming in. It was a game the host team had to win and they almost took an early lead when following a left-wing corner, the Thai defence got in a tangle and the ball glanced off Mongkol’s head but hit the inside of the post and was then cleared.

Thailand had plenty of possession and played some neat football but chances were at a premium. However, they had a great chance just before the interval when a left-wing cross found Mongkol unmarked but his “lazy” jump meant his header went harmlessly over the bar.

Phillippines continued to have the better chances and Sinthaweechai made some excellent saves in an impressive performance. Just as the game looked to be heading for stalemate, Chapuis sent Sarawat racing clear and the Bangkok Glass man held his nerve to beat the keeper with a low finish.

It was a little hard on the Philippines who had seven shots on target to Thailand’s three but it was the old adage, you have to take your chances or get punished.

The War Elephants will find out their semi-final opponents tonight when the final Group B matches are played.
