A large python taken from the forest just days ago killed his captor in Sukhothai on Tuesday morning.

The 3.3-metre-long snake, kept in an earthen water jar, is believed to have first bitten Sawan Tabklai, 55, on the hand before coiling around him and crushing him to death.

Pol Lt Col Surapong Selarit, deputy commander of Kong Krailart police station, was summoned to the scene at 6am on Tuesday.

Sawan’s sister Sawaeng Tabklai, 63, heard her brother calling for help and saw him struggling in the snake’s coils. By the time neighbours arrived to help, he was already dead from suffocation.

The snake was captured and will be released back to the wild.

Sawaeng said Sawan had caught the reptile only a few days earlier. She believed it bit his hand as he was feeding it in its holding jar.

Any death is sad, but why would you want to keep a potentially deadly creature at home? All snakes require expert knowledge to be handled safely but they are unpredictable creatures as this unfortunate man discovered.

They belong in the wild and they should be left there. It’s good that the snake was not killed as it had done nothing wrong.
