It has been proposed that the minimum wage which is currently 300 baht a day be raised by up to 10 baht a day, effective from January 1. 2017
The proposal states that there should be a variation between provinces with eight provinces not getting an increase and will remain at 300 baht a day, while 49 provinces will only get a 5 baht increase to 305 baht per day. A further 13 provinces will get an 8 baht increase to 308 baht per day whilst the wage in seven provinces – Bangkok, Nakhon Pathom, Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani, Samut Prakan, Samut Sakhon and Phuket – will rise by 10 baht to 310 baht per day
The Labour Ministry permanent secretary said after chairing a meeting of the tripartite Central Wage Committee yesterday that the meeting approved rises of the minimum daily wage for next year and will submit its resolution to the Labour Ministry, which will forward it to the Cabinet.
The chairman of the Federation of Thai Industries stated that the organisation agreed that increases in the minimum wages should vary in each province. As for the increases determined by the Central Wage Committee of Bt5-Bt10, the FTI needs to discuss with its membership whether employers could accept such rises.
He said the proposed increases would probably be acceptable by employers in principle, but it needed to be considered whether the timing is suitable as the economic recovery is not yet certain.
