During a two-day span (December 29th – December 30th) of Thailand’s New Year Seven Days Road Safety campaign (running from December 29th, 2023 to January 4th, 2024), the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) in Thailand disclosed alarming statistics. They reported a total of 71 fatalities, 739 injuries, and 724 road accidents.
Khon Kaen had the highest count of road accidents (31 incidents) during these two days, while Khon Kaen and Tak suffered the most injuries (30 each). Fatalities were notably high in Prachin Buri and Bangkok, both recording 5 deaths each.
On the campaign’s second day (December 30th), the DDPM registered 37 fatalities, 404 injuries, and 385 road accidents. Excessive speeding was the primary cause of accidents (34.55%), closely followed by drunk driving (22.60%). Motorbike accidents constituted the majority (85.29%) of these incidents, with 38% transpiring on national highways. Most accidents happened between 6:01 PM and 9:00 PM (9.61%).
Tak, located in western Thailand, experienced the highest number of accidents and injuries (18 each), while Bangkok saw the most fatalities (4 deaths).
