More torrential downpours are expected in the southern region of Thailand during the period of the 16-18 January 2017. Government spokesman Lt Gen Sansern Kaewkamnerd revealed that the flooding situation in many areas of the southern region of the country had receded but they are now concerned with the potential forecast of further rainfall.
Some areas in Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Trang, and Songkhla remain flooded. The government is doubling its efforts to drain the water with 70 water pumps and 50 flow thrusters.
Authorities are working to lower water levels in rivers and canals to allow for a faster drainage capacity.
“The general public in the southern provinces are advised to be aware of the potential danger in the next few days, such as landslides, flash floods, and the sudden increase of water level. The public are advised that they should relocate valuable items to high areas and to commute with caution, especially near coastal areas where strong winds and high waves are expected. Small boats should remain ashore,” says the spokesman.

The Government has already committed to providing compensation in cases of casualty, damage to houses, farmlands, and occupational equipment.
The Prime Minister has urged provincial governments to inform the public and effectively manage their flood warning systems during this time. The Ministry of Interior has also been instructed to form urban plans to determine a long-term solution to drainage.
The general public, in affected areas, are advised to closely monitor announcements from authorities and local government agencies. For immediate assistance they are advised to call the 1111 government hotline, or the 1784 DDPM emergency hotline, these lines are open 24 hours a day
