A football coach and a sponsor in Udon Thani face more legal trouble as five additional children aged between 10 and 13 accuse them of sexual abuse. Seeking assistance, these children and their families approached Pavena Hongsakula, chairwoman of the Pavena Foundation for Women and Children.
The two accused individuals, a 43-year-old coach and a 64-year-old retired military officer, were apprehended by the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Division (ATPD) on December 15. Charges were pressed after two other victims’ parents sought help from the Pavena Foundation. Despite the charges, both suspects, who organized financial support for the school’s football team, were released on bail, according to reports from the Bangkok Post.
Allegedly, the coach and sponsor enticed young players to stay at their homes, where the reported abuse occurred. The foundation has rescued two team members, both aged 10.
The mother of a 13-year-old victim revealed that families were initially hesitant to file complaints due to the accused individuals’ influential status. Expressing worry, a grandmother of a 10-year-old victim noted concern over the suspects’ release, especially when the coach attempted to meet her grandson in their shared community.
Pavena facilitated a meeting between the families and Pol Maj Gen Saruti Khwaengsopha, ATPD commander, for further inquiries and to lodge additional complaints. Additionally, she’s collaborating with the Justice Ministry to arrange compensation for the victims’ families. Details regarding compensation are anticipated within the next five days, overseen by Justice Minister adviser Somboon Muangklum, who is handling the case.
