The young woman seen in a viral video in which she shoots a gun out a window many times to celebrate the New Year has turned herself into police, saying she didn’t realise she was doing anything wrong.
She reported to police in Bangkok’s Sai Mai district near her home on Tuesday.
She admitted to being the shooter in the video clip. She said she didn’t realise she was breaking the law because shooting guns to greet the New Year is common in upcountry areas.
She told investigators that she fired the gun from the second floor of a house belonging to a male friend and the gun belonged to his father. Another friend took the video clip and they shared it online with other friends.
The clip quickly went viral and the reaction from the net was largely negative with many calling for police to track down the woman and arrest her for endangering the community.
The police have initially charged the young woman with the inappropriate use of gunpowder in a residential area and she faces 10 days in jail or a 5,000 baht fine.
The public have been warned that shooting a gun in this manner is against the law and it is not a New Year tradition. If a bullet had damaged property or caused death or injury the prison sentence could be between 6 and 10 years.
