bigbKhao Kradong forest park, which has undergone significant renovation over recent months, is located just 5km outside of Buriram on highway No.219.

The extremely popular school trip destination, formally called “Phanom Kradong” is the youngest, but thankfully now extinct, volcano in Thailand.

The summit of the volcano stands at 265 metres above sea level. To reach the summit you have 2 choices. The first choice would be, for those fit enough, to tackle the direct route of all 297 stone steps.

The second option would be to drive or ride around the mountain. On the way you can explore the many small statues on the sides of the road as well as studying several local plant species. The most well- known of which is the the Devil Yoni Tree, a rare plant found only in volcanic areas.

There is also, about half way round the mountain, a suspension bridge for viewing the scenery of the volcano itself.

The summit enshrines the “Phra Suphattharabophit”, Buriram’s large Buddha image built in 1969.

A pool demonstrating the mouth of the volcano, and a Buddha footprint are both located at the top of the hill. The pool demontsrates how volcanic rock can float in water. The Buddha footprint sits inside in the “Prasat Khao Kradong” which is an ancient Khmer sanctuary.

Whilst at the top, there is a chance to grab some light refreshments or a quick snack from the shop situated just behind the big Buddha. The summit also gives you a chance to witness probably the best view of Buriram.

There is also a small “ lava slide “ which will keep the children entertained.

As per laws of gravity, what goes up must come down. So depending on which option was chosen to reach the summit, its either a gentle descent through the mountain road (which is excellently sign posted) or another chance to give your legs a work out down the Naga Raj steps.

When at the bottom you will have the chance to get some more refreshments or snacks with plenty of stalls selling cold drinks and food. The opportunity to buy a souvenir is provided with plenty of stalls located in the monastery grounds.
