A nurse has told police that she had to nudge the driver of an ambulance after she noticed he had nodded off to sleep.

The driver came round startled and in a panic wrenched the steering wheel round, lost control and glanced off a large tree.

The Ban Phai hospital ambulance ended up on its side on the Ban Phai – Khon Kaen bypass.

The driver and two nurses were on their way back to Ban Phai hospital after delivering a patient to Khon Kaen hospital yesterday afternoon.

The three occupants of the vehicle were only slightly injured – and were taken back to their own hospital for observation.

Driver Yuthana Baibong, aged about 40, told police that he had been on duty since morning and this was his second run of the day. He had felt very tired, he said.

Police said they would let the injured recover before continuing their investigations.
