The National Telecoms Authority are introducing mandatory finger print scanning for applications for new SIM cards from May.

Information from the scans will be stored at the authority’s facilities.

In the first instance there will be 600 machines operational split between AIS, DTAC and TRUE corporations. By the end of the year this is expected to rise to 8,000 machines.

Software has been developed by Kasetsat University.

Negotiations have taken place between the authorities and the retailers of SIM cards so that the scanning can begin next month.

The authority said that the cost of scanners is not expected to be high and that the finger printing will soon be able to be done at shops nationwide.
