The Automobile Club de l’Ouest was founded in 1906 through the passion of a group of visionaries who realized that the motor car was a major invention that would revolutionize the twentieth century. The Automobile Club de l’Ouest, creator and organizer of the Le Mans 24 Hours, which took place for the first time in 1923, immediately became the benchmark in endurance racing throughout the world. In 1999, the ACO decided it was time to expand its events on the international scene, and offer the public the opportunity to thrill to races inspired by the Le Mans 24 Hours. It launched a championship on the North American continent with its US partners complying with the technical regulation of its blue riband event. The European Le Mans Series was created in 2004 in the wake of the success of the American series.

Since the start of 2012, the ACO is the promoter and organizer of the FIA World Endurance Championship, which gives enthusiasts the world over the opportunity to see eight Le Mans- type races run on three continents. Pierre Fillon, the President of the ACO since 31st May 2012, intends to continue the work of his predecessors by pursuing the international development of the ACO of which the Asian Le Mans Series is a further step.
