Samson a surprise signing.

After much speculation, Buriram United fill their ASEAN player quota with Vietnamese striker Hoang Vu Samson from Hanoi FC. The naturalized Vietnamese citizen, who is Nigerian by birth, is comfortable playing in a number of attacking roles. His versatility will be crucial in helping Buriram United reach peak levels of performance while competing both on a domestic and continental front.

The attacker began his career at Vietnameses clubs Thang Quang Ninh and Dong Thap, before being touted for a move to Spanish giants Atletico Madrid, a move that was held up over issues concerning the forward’s contract. Ultimately he returned to Vietnam, where he has played for Hanoi since 2011.

Buriram were expected to go after Samson’s teammate, Nguyen Van Quyet, but instead signed the Vietnamese-Nigerian.

Samson is 29 and has scored 72 goals in 53 games in the Vietnam top flight. (I’ve watched a video of some of his goals and he certainly looks a good finisher, regardless of the standard of the opposition.)

This comes after shortly after the club announced the signing of Edgar Bruno da Silva from Qatari sidIe Al-Duhail.
