Intense precipitation in Nakhon Ratchasima has inflicted substantial harm to the local jasmine flower crops, causing distress among the nearby farmers. The aftermath of this heavy rainfall has resulted in a scarcity of jasmine flowers in the market, leading to a significant surge in prices due to heightened demand.

Today, journalists visited a jasmine field in Non Sung district, Nakhon Ratchasima, and observed the extensive damage inflicted on the blossoms as a result of nearly daily rainfall. Most farmers in the region have been negatively impacted, with their jasmine crops decaying and suffering considerable harm.

One such farmer, an 80-year-old named Jamlong Khamnok from Thaprasat, Non Sung, who cultivates jasmine on approximately one rai of land, noted a substantial decline in his crop yield. Before the heavy rains, he used to harvest 9 to 12 kilograms of flowers per day. However, the persistent rainfall over the past few days has led to a sharp reduction in yield, with only one kilogram of jasmine flowers being produced daily in the last two to three days, as reported by KhaoSod. He stated, “Most of the flowers either fail to bloom or grow slowly and then rot, turning purple.”

This has placed significant pressure on the farmers, particularly with the escalating prices in the local markets. Previously, the price stood at 200 baht per kilogram. However, due to the shortage and increased demand, the price has multiplied.

Typically, farmers sell a portion of their jasmine flowers at the Nakhon Ratchasima city market and use the rest to create jasmine garlands for sale. Nevertheless, the continuous rainfall has led to a near absence of jasmine flowers, causing a ripple effect on market supply and prices.

Heavy rainfall in Thailand has brought about substantial challenges and risks throughout the country. The Thai Meteorological Department issued a warning today about severe thunderstorms affecting 41 provinces.

While Bangkok can anticipate heavy rainfall, the northern and northeastern regions are expected to bear the brunt, with 80% of these areas likely to experience intense rainfall. This could result in sudden flooding, posing a danger to residents, especially those living in mountainous regions, near waterways, and in low-lying areas.
