Thailand’s national polo team have won the prestigious All Asia Cup played at the VR Polo Club in Bangkok. For the uninitiated polo is played on horseback with four players per team. A hard ball is struck with a long-handled mallett and the idea is to get the ball between two posts to score a goal.Games are divided into four parts called chukkas which I believe is an Indian word as that is where the game originated during the British colonial years.
It demands great courage and horsemanship and serious injuries are commonplace. Although they were the hosts, Thailand were not really expected to win but they were outstanding in their group matches before dominating Indonesia in the final to win 7.5-1. (I’m not too sure how a half is scored!)
Teams from Malaysia,South Korea,Mongolia,Indonesia,Brunei,China,Philipines and of course Thailand took part.
