We at the Buriram Times endeavour to make sure our facts and articles are always accurate but occasionally we can slip up. Previously, we reported that Thailand had already qualified for the third qualifying round of the World Cup. At the moment Thailand are top of their group with 13 points and if they avoid defeat in Iraq on March 24th they will qualify as group winners.
However, should they lose, things become a little more complicated. There are eight groups and the winners all qualify. After that the four runners-up with the most points will also qualify. Indonesia, who are in Thailand’s group are currently under FIFA suspension so Thailand will only play six games instead of eight.
Therefore the results of the runners-up against the bottom team in each of the other groups will not count. If teams are level on points goal difference will count, followed by goals scored. Should teams still be level a home and away play off will decide who goes through.I hope this clarifies the situation.
