Police in Chumporn heard a tale from a young boy who ran away from home that resembled a tale from the pen of Victorian writer Charles Dickens.
But it happened in modern day Thailand.
The boy – given the moniker “B” and aged just 12 – ran away from his central Thailand home of Saraburi. He said he had been repeatedly hit and abused by both his parents.
They whacked him all over his body and a month later his wounds had still not recovered. He had marks all over his arms and legs.
He said both his parents are drug addicts.
So after a particularly savage beating he left home at the beginning of October and traveled towards Bangkok. He got to the Hualampong area of the capital where he begged for food and shelter from strangers.
Eventually he found his way to Hua Hin last weekend where he met a construction worker – Amorn Bunsak, 28, – waiting for a train.
“He said he had no mum and dad,” said Amorn, ” and I felt sorry for him”. He allowed to boy to come with him on his journey to Lang Suan in the South where he was returning to work and he stayed for a few days.
But then Amorn decided to take him to the police who called in child protection services.
“B” is now in the care of Chumporn services before he is transferred to a child protection home in Saraburi where his journey began.
Hopefully, this poor, young boy will now be able to get on with his life without the fear of physical abuse. Charges need to be brought against his parents, being hooked on drugs is not an excuse for assaulting a minor.
Sadly, there will be many young children in a similar situation whose plight will never be picked up.
