The Buriram Golf Society Texas Scramble took place at Buriram Golf Course on Friday April 8. Eight teams of three took part and were joined by a team of two who were hit by a late withdrawal of their third player. It was the usual scramble rules though there was a change to the handicapping system with the three players’ handicaps being added together then divided by three to give a team handicap.

It was a shotgun start, that is all the teams teed off at the same time on different holes. It was hotting up at 7.50am when the teams teed off and it became much hotter as the round progressed making it a very testing competition. The tournament had been generously sponsored by Greg Miles and his wife New, owners of the Relax Corner Massage Centre, situated on the back road opposite the I Mobile Stadium and the Amari Hotel.

Greg also provided prize winners with free massage vouchers as well as giving all competitors 30% off vouchers. As previously stated the heat was certainly a challenge but it did not detract from the quality of golf, with some very impressive scores coming in. Greg also announced after the competition that he had awarded a special 10,000 baht prize for an eagle and was delighted to announce that he had won it !! Hmmm.

As ever, regardless of whether they won or not, everyone thoroughly enjoyed the event and Peter Dempsey’s efforts in organizing it were much appreciated by everyone involved. Thanks also to Buriram Times photographer Frank for turning up to take the photos. Once again, all the caddies had a good day and they have now got the hang of the format.

Competition Results

1. Colin Bradwell, Alex Lowe and Peter Hughes (after a back nine count-back) 57 pts.

2. David Griffin, David Bies and Tim Davies 57 pts

3. Rod Young, Greg Miles and Peter Thripp 55 pts

4.Mike Pikard, Martin Moyle and Keith Wood 54 pts

5.David Sabino, Darrell Busser and Doug Carson 52 pts

6.Lindsey Warden, Magnus Sundgren and Geoff Hull 52 pts

7. Roger Ribbings, Frank Barber and Graham Dresser 51 pts

8. Peter Dempsey, Neil Cameron and Tony Murphy 47 pts

As previously mentioned Pedro Riem and Peter Bourne were left without their third player so could not enter the competition but played extremely well .

The nearest- the- pin on the first and tenth hole was won by Magnus Sundgren and on the sixth and fifteenth by Tim Davies.

The players then retired to Jimmy’s Sports Cafe for some much needed refreshment. Thanks to Jimmy and Noy for providing the food which of course was prepared to the usual high standard which we have come to expect at Jimmy’s. Thanks also to the girls for keeping the beer flowing.

After the meal Peter Dempsey oversaw the prize presentations, awarded by sponsors Greg and New.

Peter then went on to say a few words about the Society’s inaugural captain Neil Cameron. As many of you are aware, Neil is not in the best of health but he was determined to play in one more competition. It was expected that Neil would just play a few shots here and there but to everyone’s amazement and total admiration, he played the full round. As Neil put it, this was his swansong and it was probably the best round of golf he has ever played, given the circumstances. Words cannot fully explain how much courage and determination Neil showed in completing his final round. He has all our best wishes for the future and our thanks for showing how to deal with personal adversity.

Peter then went on to mention future events, the Club Champonship, an away trip to Korat and our own “Ryder Cup” in September, Europe v The Rest Of The World. Details to follow on Buriram Golf Society on Facebook.
